The latest venture in this tricky restaurant spot, will hopefully outstay the previous incumbents who struggled to make the location work. After our brief visit last weekend, we hope that Bento Boss hangs around for many years, as we are going to need lots of time to feast our way through their lovely menu.
Due to time constraints, our visit was a quick one. Just a single course and a drink but what a stunning taste sensation the visit provided. There was enough of an early winter nip in the evening air outside for us to justify sharing a flask of warm Sake. If you haven’t tried warm Sake yet, we thoroughly recommend that you do, it’s a gorgeous accompaniment to any rice based meal.
After much head scratching and multiple changes of mind, we finally made our choices. One of us selected the Chicken Teriyaki Bento, with the other going for Curry Ayam, a Malaysian Chicken and Potato dish.
The Bento was terrific, the tasty Miso soup arrived first, quickly followed by a classic bento box compromising the following: agedashi tofu, wakame salad, steamed rice and of course the teriyaki chicken. The chicken was plentiful, supremely succulent with a lovely tasty teriyaki glaze. A Bento box full of flavour.
The Curry Ayam was, if anything, even better. A wonderfully rich and flavoursome sauce enveloped the copious amount of chicken and potato. We were also able to select coconut rice to go with the dish, which perfectly enhanced this delicious meal.
We certainly to hope to visit again as there is a full range of dishes from South East Asia to select from. So, don’t forget to look upwards when you are in the vicinity of Clifton Down shopping centre and you will see Bento Boss on the first floor, on the corner nearest the railway station. Simply follow the specially embossed paving slabs towards the rear of the building then head up the long flight of internal steps. The room is bright and welcoming with the window tables having great views for watching the ebb and flow of the busy Whiteladies Road. Above all though it’s the food that should draw you to Bento Boss. On the evidence of this visit it’s a stand out treat in the ever-expanding array of Asian food options in Bristol.
