JP Destiny - English / Thai Cafe

We recently noticed that the former Café Avanti site on the junction of Bishop Road and Kellaway Avenue had changed hands and is now going under the name of JP Destiny. What really intrigued us though was the menu, which veered from traditional English breakfast and sandwich choices to a small selection of Thai lunch options. Not a combination that is found very often, especially in this part of North Bristol.

On a damp and dreary pre Christmas lunchtime, we decided to take the short drive from a very hectic Gloucester Road, to try out this curious new venture. The main room was bright and welcoming and we settled down to choose from the menu. By the way, it was nice to be instantly given a bottle of water for the table, a simple touch that is lacking from so many places in Bristol.

The Thai lunch option is simple enough, you choose from Chicken, Pork, Beef, Prawn, Tofu or Duck versions of one of the following dishes – Noodle Soup, Fried Rice, Nasi Gorang, Singapore Noodles, Pad Thai, Pad Krapow, Rad Na, Pad See Ew, or Special Chow Mein. Pricing is even easier; whatever you have it costs just £6.00 now that makes things very straightforward. Interestingly, the menu also mentions that any other Thai dishes can be made to order, not something that you see offered very often.

OK, your already of ahead of me, some of those aren’t Thai dishes but that’s how they are presented on the menu. We decided to have a Chicken Nasi Gorang and a Beef Pad Krapow and both dishes were tasty and perfectly proportioned for a lunchtime meal. The dullness of the weather outside was replaced by a sunny vibrancy in our spirit as the flavours took control of our taste buds.

Currently the restaurant is only opening until the early evening but the friendly staff advised us, that should they be successful in obtaining a alcohol licence, they hope to open later in the evening as well. It’s early days for this independently owned place but hopefully it can be a useful addition to eating options in the Kellaway Avenue area. Along with the autumn opening of The Gloucester Old Spot further along the road, maybe this long road is finally developing some interesting places to sit and enjoy a meal.

I should mention that the picture above was not taken on the lovely Kellaway Avenue!
